3 Facts on air pollution's Summer Learning Journey

In 2016, the World Health Organisation announced that Timaru, a small town in the South Island of New Zealand, had the highest recorded levels of air pollution in New Zealand. Some of this pollution was caused by natural events (eg. fires) but most of it was produced (made) by humans.
Watch this short video on air pollution. It will tell you more about natural and human causes of pollution.
On your blog, share three new things that you learned about air pollution from this video.
The first fact I found was that when you burn fossil fuels to create energy it releases Greenhouse Gasses in Greenhouse Gasses there are different types of gasses such as Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and Flourinated Gasses these gasses make the tempter rise. The way this works is when the Greenhouse gasses are put into our planet the Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and Flourinated trap the heat from the sun and gathers it up until it is to hot to hold onto and when it reaches that point the Greenhouse gasses releases the heat into our planet and the temperature shoots up then it gets very very hot. The second fact I learnt is the smog is very bad to humans that inhale. Smog is a type of air pollution that reduces visibility to any thing that can see or can be seen trough. Smog can be split into 2 categorizes: sulfurous and Photo chemical, sulfurous smog is made of sunlight, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere, which leaves airborne particles and ground-level ozone. Photo chemical is caused by sunlight, nitrogen oxides and Volatile Organic Compounds as well. The last fact I learnt was about toxic pollution's, toxic pollution's have chemicals such as mercury, benzene and dioxin. I hope you enjoyed this blog post it took a very long time to finish but please leave a positive comment and make sure to include what fact you liked best.

  1. Hi Evangeline,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. Goodness, you've learned a lot about air pollution!!! Well done, you!!

I wish we didn't have to know about air pollution. It's not a positive message to learn that we're putting toxic chemicals into our atmosphere. But now that we know what effect they're having, we can work hard to find ways of changing how we do things. Hopefully, one day, we'll be able to say that live on the planet in a harmless way!

As the video says, not all pollution is caused by human activity. Forest fires and other natural events change the air around us too. It's just that most of the pollution comes from use of fossil fuels for our cars and trucks, boats and planes, and from waste produced by our factories. We have to clean those up!!

I hope you've learned a lot through this Summer Learning Journey program and that you're feeling ready for another term at school!! Good luck this year!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
