Lansan trees in the Caribbean project Summer Learning Journey

New Zealand is home to some unique wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. While we work very hard to protect our natural habitats so, too, do people living and working in other countries. One of the oldest international wildlife conservation organisations is called ‘Fauna & Flora International’ (FFI). They support a number of projects around the world, including those working to protect Lansan trees in the Caribbean, fruit forests in Tajikistan, and national reserves in Mozambique. Read about each of these projects and choose the one that interests you the most.
On your blog, tell us which project you find most interesting and why..
I would want to learn about the Lansan trees in the Caribbean project. It is pretty bad that almost 60% of these trees are gone because of over exploitation and deforestation. My family is very religious and feel the aromatics from the Lansan trees being used for traditional ceremonies very important. I also think that using this tree to keep away mosquitoes and bad spirits pretty awesome too.

  1. Hi Evangeline,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

I'm so glad to learn that you know a bit already about the value of the Lansan trees because your family uses the aromatics. The good news is that people now realize there is a way to extract some of the resin from these trees without cutting them down, or damaging them. Hopefully in the future these forests can be expanded while still being used for beneficial purposes.

You gave a good explanation as to why you chose this project to research. Well done! It's important that we know how our choices affect the world, isn't it?

I hope that you've had a really wonderful summer holiday and that now you're excited to be back at school for a new term.

It was super to have you participate in the Summer Learning Journey program!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
