This story is about 8 handsome brother's. One day they went hunting, but instead of food they found seven beautiful women and the brothers immediately fell in love, except for the youngest brother, who's name was Meti. Meti's brothers took the women to there village to make them there wife's. After they were married, Meti's brothers only focused on there wives not themselves only them, they didn't even eat and as time went past there handsomeness started to fade. Meti was getting suspicious of his brothers wife's so he decided to spy on them. He followed the women and listened to there awful plan to starve his brothers to death, as soon as Meti heard there plan he rushed back to the village to tell his brothers but they didn't listen until Meti told them to look at themselves, he told them what they used to look like and what they look like when they married the women then they finally believed Meti. The brothers had to get there wife's as far away from them as possible to be safe so they had to get a magic net and threw it over them. They waited for there wife's to get home then they threw it over them and Meti flew them over to the god of the stars. Meti asked Uru (the god of the stars) to take the women as far away as possible but like Meti's brothers Uru (the god of the stars) started to fall for the women's beauty. Uru took them far far away from meti and his brothers, but every year Uru gives the women a chance to shine and that creates the seven stars (Matariki).
Hi Evangeline!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great summary of the 'Seven Stars of Matariki'. :)
Did you enjoy this story?
I thought Miti was a pretty cool character - I have read a few different Matariki books but I think this one and the 7 kites of Matariki are pretty awesome! Have you read the 7 Kites of Matariki?
Have you learnt much about Matariki in school?
I know that when I was in school there was only 7 stars of Matariki but I heard recently that it is now counted as 9...
I found this article here that talks a little bit about it:
